Halloween Safety for Dogs: 10 Tips for a Safe & Spooky Night
Halloween is one of the most fun nights of the year — costumes, candy, glowing pumpkins, trick-or-treaters and plenty of photo opportunities with your favorite furry family member.
But for our pets, Halloween can also bring a few unexpected risks. Strange costumes, constantly ringing doorbells, open front doors, unfamiliar decorations and bowls full of candy can turn an exciting evening into an overwhelming one.
Whether your pup is joining the trick-or-treating crew or staying cozy at home, a little preparation can help keep Halloween spooky, not scary.
Here are 10 simple ways to keep your pets safe this Halloween.
1. Keep the Candy for the Humans 🍫
That candy bowl may look tempting to your pup, but Halloween treats should stay safely out of paw's reach.
Chocolate can be toxic to dogs, and sugar-free candies and gums may contain xylitol, an ingredient that can be extremely dangerous to pets. Candy wrappers can also cause choking or intestinal blockages if swallowed.
Keep your Halloween stash somewhere your pet can't reach — and make sure little trick-or-treaters know not to share their candy with furry friends.
If you suspect your pet has eaten something potentially toxic, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison-control service right away.
2. Make Sure Their ID Is Up to Date
Halloween means doors opening and closing all evening long. Even a dog who normally stays close to home can become frightened by a costume, loud noise or unexpected visitor and slip through an open door.
Before Halloween night, double-check that your pet is wearing a secure, properly fitted collar with an ID tag that includes your current contact information.
If your pet is microchipped, this is also a great time to make sure your registration information is current.
A little preparation can make a huge difference if your pet accidentally gets loose.
3. Use a Leash for Trick-or-Treating
If your dog is coming along for the Halloween fun, keep them securely leashed — even if they're normally trustworthy off-leash.

5. Be Extra Careful After Dark 🌙
If you're walking after sunset, visibility matters.
Choose well-lit routes whenever possible and consider reflective or light-up accessories for both you and your dog. A glow-in-the-dark pet tee can also add some spooky Halloween style while helping your pup stand out after dark.
Remember that glow-in-the-dark materials generally need exposure to light before they'll glow brightly, so give them a good "charge" before heading outside.
6. Watch the Decorations

7. Give Nervous Pets a Quiet Place
Not every pet wants to participate in Halloween — and that's perfectly okay.

Set up a comfortable space away from the front door with their bed, favorite toys and water. Closing curtains and playing music, television or another familiar background sound may also help reduce outside stimulation.

8. Never Leave a Costumed Pet Unattended
Even if your pet seems perfectly comfortable in their costume, supervise them while they're wearing it.
Fabric can become caught on furniture or fencing, accessories can shift, and decorative pieces can suddenly become tempting chew toys.
Once the photos and festivities are finished, remove the costume before leaving your pet alone.
9. Know When Your Dog Has Had Enough
Even social dogs can become overwhelmed by a busy Halloween night.

Put on the costume, grab the treats and snap your pictures before trick-or-treaters start arriving. You'll get better photos, your pet will probably be more relaxed, and you won't be trying to photograph a dog who's already decided they're completely over Halloween.
